Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree at Southern Miss is a multidisciplinary program consisting of university general curriculum courses, College of Science and Technology core courses, major core courses, and additional technical coursework in the major. The total number of semester credit hours required to complete degree requirements varies depending on what university bulletin is being used. Students entering the university are placed under the bulletin that is current at the time. However, students may request that their applicable bulletin be changed to any bulletin within six year of filing the applicationa for degree. The university bulletin applicable to an individual student is the authoritative document for degree requirements.

The following documents are for planning purposes only. Final degree requirements are dependent upon the catalog year and completion of an advisor-approved degree plan.

Degree Requirements

Students pursing a major in Information Technology are required to complete the university general education curriculum, the college core, the major core and one of the technical concentration areas. Completion of a technical specialization is also required for some concentrations.

Students pursuing a major in Information Technolgy are strongly encouraged to additionally complete an interdisciplinary minor to further develop their understanding of an application domain of Information Technology. Examples include academic minors in Art, , Biological Sciences, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Community Health Sciences, Computer Science, Construction Engineering Technology, Education of the Deaf, Geography, Hospitality Management, Instructional Technology, Insurance, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Speach-Language Pathology and Audiology. Completion of an academic minor generally requires an additional 18 hours of coursework.

Students pursuing a double major (two Bachelor of Science degrees within the same College) must satisfy all major requirements.

Students pursuing a double degree (two majors in different colleges) must satisfy both college requirements in addition to the Information Technology major requirements.

Students pursing a minor in Information Technology must satisfy the minor requirements listed in the applicable university bulletin. Completion of a minor in Information Technology requires a minimum of 21 hours over two-to-four semesters. At least half of the hours applied towards a minor in Information Technology must be completed at Southern Miss.

Students pursing a minor in Information Security must satisfy the minor requirements listed in the applicable university bulletin. Completion of a minor in Information Security requires a minimum of 21 hours over two-to-four semesters. At least half of the hours applied towards a minor in Information Technology must be completed at Southern Miss.
